Our Company

BOULDER WAVE was founded in Boulder, Colorado, USA in November 1993 to support the efforts of elite athletes coming to Boulder for high-altitude training. As the athletes we helped performed better and better, --with Yuko Arimori’s marathon bronze at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games and her teammate Hiromi Suzuki’s marathon gold medal at the 1997 Athens World Championships as the breakthroughs-- we expanded into athlete representation and management. Now in our 17th year, we continue to provide both training and management support at the very highest levels.

The numbers bear out our success:  In the eleven Olympic Games and IAAF World Championships held from 1996 through 2008, athletes either supported or represented by Boulder Wave won 10 of the 33 medals awarded in the women’s marathon.  This is a 30 percent success ratio matched by no other organization in the world. From our first day our slogan has been, “In training to be world class,” reflecting our primary goal of bringing athletes to the highest levels of world-class competition.

Athlete Representatives

BOULDER WAVE strives to help our athletes maximize their athletic abilities and their financial potential. We aim to have long-term relationships with all of our athletes, working together with the athletes, their coaches, and their sponsors to plan not only each immediate race season, but also their longer-term athletic and competitive progress. This includes negotiations with race and meet directors and with sponsors; logistical support of training; marketing and promotion; and all other aspects of elite athletes’ careers. Our goal is for each of our athletes to reach their utmost potential, whether that be an Olympic medal, qualification for a national championship, or attaining new Personal Best marks. In addition to the athletes we work with under contract, we occasionally work in various other representative relationships, such as supporting a number of Japanese elite athletes in their overseas race plans.

Altitude Training Coordinators

SINCE OUR FOUNDING in 1993, we have assisted well over 2,500 athletes and coaches with altitude training. While the majority of these training camps have been in our home base of Boulder, Colorado, USA, we have also provided logistical support for training camps around the world, such as Albuquerque, USA; St. Moritz, Switzerland; and Falls Creek, Australia. For example, in 2003, the coaches of Japan’s Mizuki Noguchi hired Boulder Wave to scout out a European altitude-training base for Noguchi in preparation for the 2003 Paris World Championships and 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Establishing St. Moritz as Noguchi’s European training base, Boulder Wave then worked with a local hotel and the St. Moritz city sports office to set the on-ground logistics of the training. Off of this training, Noguchi went on to win the marathon silver in Paris and marathon gold in Athens.

Beyond the elite end of the sport, Boulder Wave also supports altitude training in Boulder for the average runner. For six years we supported ASICS Japan and ASICS Korea with the altitude-training portion of their “Road to NYC” promotion tied to the ING New York City Marathon. We have also developed such projects as working with Boulder’s sister city of Yamagata, Japan, to coach and host a group of 16 middle school students for a one-week training camp in Boulder.

We also arrange Boulder training camps for numerous other agents and athletes, believing our sport is best served by all athletes and agents working together when possible.

Japan Liaison

WITH 16+ YEARS OF WORKING with Japanese athletes, corporate sponsors, and media, preceded by six years of living in Tokyo, Boulder Wave president Brendan Reilly has a deep network of Japan connections. We are able to introduce foreign event directors to Japanese media contacts, assist other agents in bringing their athletes to Japanese events, and serve as a resource for non-Japanese media to gain information on Japan. Brendan Reilly also provides commentary and writes occasionally on the Japanese scene, such as the January 2008 Running Times feature on Japanese distance running, “Where the Marathon Matters.
